HAWAII STYLE, YO

The Latest Hawaiian Styles

By Jamarcus Howard

I can remember living in Arizona with my grandparents, my granddad always wore Hawaiian shirts, and as a young man seeing this I thought it was odd that he was wearing them because we didn’t live in Hawaii. I really thought clothes were geographic to where someone lived, but as my granddad used to say “clothes don’t know no nothing about locations son” Living in Cali now, I wear my Hawaiian street gear, and I have to tell you that I look nothing like my granddad back in the day.

Now every man knows that Tommy Bahama is the king of the Hawaiian shirt, but I am here to tell you that Paul Smith, JW Anderson, and Gucci have designed Hawaiian shirts on a whole other level, my dudes. I look for style first, I always ask can I pair this shirt with shorts, jeans, and swim trunks? Will this make me look dated for my age? And is it on-trend? The camp collar or it’s commonly known as the Cuban collar works best for me when choosing the right Hawaiian shirt because I have a somewhat slender neck, and it’s always a good fit so that the shirt doesn’t look too big. Here are my fashion must-haves for a street Hawaiian-styled look for summer no matter where you live.

RESORT-STYLE

My go-to designers for stylish shirts are Mango, The Kooples, or All Saints, but if you don’t want to break the bank with designer brands check out H&M Men’s or Cubavera. These resort-style shirts represent the 3 C’s in fashion culture, class, and comfort. If you’re headed out with the crew on a vacation then you def need to pack a few of these shirts for your trip, or if you are just doing you for a day out then I recommend wearing a Guayabera (button-down shirt made of linen or cotton with four pockets and either embroidery or pleats down the front) shirt and casual khaki shorts with low top sneakers or flip flops.

CASUAL LUAU

Hawaiian street style doesn’t mean wearing big leafed shirts and jeans everywhere you go, there are fashionable alternatives to Hawaiian style. When I am headed out for a social gathering with friends, if the spot is in a backyard I occasionally wear a printed blazer with linen trousers, a tee-shirt, and casual loafers without socks. Mix up your style with printed shirts, khaki trousers, or soft jeans, grab a drink and hang out and look good while doing it.

BOLD TEES

Tee shirts are essential for your wardrobe no matter what the weather, I mean if you looked in your drawer right now I bet you have an array of tees to choose from. Tee shirts are the most versatile pieces of clothing you could own, you can wear them underneath an open buttoned-down shirt, alone and with a pair of jeans, or underneath a dinner jacket or blazer. I enjoy a colorful tee paired with swim trunks when I am headed out to the beach or pool. If you enjoy wearing printed tees then pair them with Hawaiian shorts, or with a pair of jean shorts, and sliders and go out to enjoy the sun and surf.
